The Genius of J.S. Bach’s “Crab Canon” Visualized on a Möbius Strip

Holy harpsichord.

We know J.S. Bach was a genius composer. Certainly among the top two or three that have ever lived by most measures. Even knowing that, I was not prepared for the awesomeness you are about to see.

This is the first canon from Bach’s Musical Offering, known as the “crab canon”. The first level of awesome is when you find out that it was designed to be played backwards and forwards. But lots of people have done that … big deal, right?

Then you find out that it was written to be played backwards and forwards at the same time. That’s pretty amazing, but again, since it’s not that long I wouldn’t classify it as an Earth-shattering epiphany.

BUT THEN … graphic artist Jos Leys (who made the video), show how this Bach piece is basically the musical version of a Möbius strip.

Mind. Blown.

How a molecular biologist proposes! So cute.
DNA amplified to different sized fragments via the polymerase chain reaction, and then seperated by size on a gel. This isn’t that hard actually. I just got a Valentine’s Day idea for my lady :) Time to design some romantic DNA.
I think more people should get creative with their science, no?

Science-ify your breakfast with a Möbius bagel

You’ve probably heard of a Möbius strip before - it’s a continuous shape that only has one side and one edge. You can make one pretty easily by cutting a strip of paper, giving it a half twist, and taping the ends together to form a loop. However, if you want to really impress, make a Möbius bagel. By following the instructions, you can cut your bagel (or your donut!) into two interlocking bagel halves. From now on, eat your breakfast like a Scientist!

Math up your breakfast, and increase shmear surface area at the same time!! Win-win.

Infinite noms!
